Meet the Working Group 2
Strategic management: towards long-term, science-driven approaches in urban forestry
Large European cities like Barcelona, Amsterdam, Antwerp and Vienna have urban forest strategies or plans, each with their own specific focus, but also with an identifiable common ground. Often, cities have developed and continuously improved their urban forest/tree plan through trial and error. So far, there is little guidance on how to develop a good urban forest plan in particular, also from the perspective of the needs and possibilities of municipalities of different sizes. Yet, this could be a key driver for cities and municipalities to implement structural planning of trees and integrate into other plans like storm water plans, mobility plans, climate plans, social integration, … Furthermore, there is need to strengthen the scientific community within urban forestry in the EU.
Today, the urban forestry capacities and knowledge are scattered all over the EU and still lack a coherent platform despite earlier initiatives including the COST Action E12 and the European Forum on Urban Forestry. Additionally, there is no structural connection between the urban forest communities and the arboricultural communities such as the European Arboricultural Council (EAC) and the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).
